50mileRadius.org is a free, subscription based quarterly newsletter.

Beacon, NY is the first radius inside a plan for a worldwide model. The intent of 50mileRadius.org is to be a curated, trustworthy source of information regarding the best an area has to offer in the way of highly conscious businesses, products and services. We believe in an ideal world, and we believe it is closer than you realize. We want to bridge the gap for you and make it easier to find businesses, products and services that you can feel good about supporting, and at the same time support your local economy.

Much of inspiration for this project began by reading 2 significant books:
Cradle to Cradle:
William McDonough & Michael Braungart
Natural Capitalism:
Paul Hawken, Amory Lovins, L. Hunter Lovins
As well as the work of Buckminster Fuller and Mohammed Yunus.

Seven Principles of Social Business
These were developed by Prof. Muhammad Yunus and Hans Reitz, the co-founder of Grameen Creative Lab:
• Business objective will be to overcome poverty, or one or more problems (such as education, health,   technology access, and environment) which threaten people and society; not profit maximization
• Financial and economic sustainability
• Investors get back their investment amount only; no dividend is given beyond investment money
• When investment amount is paid back, company profit stays with the company for expansion and improvement
• Environmentally conscious
• Workforce gets market wage with better working conditions
• Do it with joy

This is just the start. I have at least 20 years of plans laid out as I grow 50mileRadius into the full vision I have been inspired to work toward. I look forward to serving you.

FAQ
Sustainability: What does it really mean?
At it's core, it is the balance of production and consumption, in the present and looking toward the future....this requires the reconciliation of environmental, social equity and economic demands - the "three pillars" of sustainability or (the 3 E's).[1]
...the three pillars of sustainability are not mutually exclusive and can be mutually reinforcing.[2]

What are 50mileRadius' criteria?
Based around the 7 Principles of Social Business listed above. Major cities like New York or L.A. will not be our targets, rather smaller cities with populations of 25,000 or less, more than 50 miles outside major metropolitan areas.

Are there other 50mileRadius cities?
Yes, there will be!! As the flagship site for the city of Beacon, NY rounds out we will begin more sites. At least one in each state in the US, and there are plans for international cities as well. Research is currently underway.
